Virus... Can someone help me get rid of it?

I ran a scan with AVG anti-virus last night.  It found a java/ByteVerify virus.  It can't get rid of it.  Does anyone know of a fix for it?  Should I go out and buy nortons?  My comp locks up all the time, I think this may be why.
