Offutt AFB
In the 1980/1985 time frame, Offutt AFB was SAC HQ. It served as the nerve center of nuclear deterrance managing bomber and ICBM alert forces. It has a hardened infrastructure built 3 stories underground. This was where President Bush went on 9/11. It was the home of "Looking Glass" where at least one EC-135 remained aloft 24/7 from 1961 to 1990.
During the 80's there were many RAF Vulcan bomber deployments hosted at Offutt. It was also home to the E4-B doomsday planes. They are highly modified 747's. Their mission is to provide a mobile command and control hub for the President, Secretary of Defense, and Joint Chiefs of Staff during national emergencies or nuclear conflict. With refueling, they can stay airborne for days.
At that time, the mission was to provide the best defense of the US possible in order to deter an attack on our country.
The SAC motto was, "Peace is our Profession". It was proudly displayed on the base sign at Offutt AFB.
